Our first step is to understand your sensory clothing requirements precisely. We’ll bring in our material, design, and pattern experts. Like most customers, you staff your own fashion experts. Although we can and do help with aesthetics, our focus is the technical value add. We’ll guide you through fabric options, different sensor sizing, and positioning options. If your vision remains unclear, we’ll create mock-ups and provide recommendations for next steps. From concept to production of the product sample, it will typically take anywhere from three to six months depending upon the complexity. That’s a drastic reduction from those who go it alone!

Once we understand your requirements, we’ll review our comprehensive project library and reference designs. We’ll consider and recommend the best product architecture and conduct feasibility studies to support the direction of your project. Our staff will create models and prototypes to show you how the product will actually work; we will serve as an informed and savvy eye for aesthetic selection of color, finishes, and fabrics. And, most importantly, we will ensure that your product is ergonomic, wearable, and comfortable to create a great user experience. We’ll also go the extra mile to conduct user research, review studies, and even look at secondary human factors guidance to ensure your product supports the optimum user experience.
The development step is a bit more involved, but this is to be expected. We need to determine the architecture at a system level. Here we decide upon the ideal hardware, software, and the connectors required. We’ll build a written design and possibly 3D CAD drawings of tooling (virtual mechanical tooling drawings) reflecting the appropriate tools needed to produce your sensory clothing product. And we’ll leverage our most knowledgeable experts with respect to MFG design rules to ensure your design is scalable.
The e-textiles building blocks consist of connectors, wiring, and sensors. They need to integrate on the textile platform. Not all sensors work with every smart fabric. But, our material experts have definitive fabrics expertise and will recommend options that provide you with optimum conductivity. Our in-house engineers will design and build sensors, or buy and integrate sensors, depending on the best method to meet your requirements. Our pattern experts who bring aesthetics expertise will provide significant insight to clothing patterning as our team collaborates to incorporate sensors into the garment.
Our intention is to build prototypes and provide you with physical samples at this phase. Usually the team will build five samples over an approximate six-week timeframe. The time to develop your project will depend upon a number of variables:
Our intention is to build a quality product that’s scalable. During our development process we ensure our miniaturized electronics within the textile remain stretchy and super flexible. And we design tooling for heat bonding, die cutting, welding, alignment, and laser cutting for the manufacturing process. We build tool test plans and test our tooling to ensure that the tools designed to build the smart textile remain durable.
Now comes the fun part! First we inspect all product material to ensure it meets quality standards. Then we’ll cut the raw materials to produce the product components, including die or laser cutting of the fabric and cutting holes for sensor location. We assemble electrodes and sensor casings and test for connector connectivity at this stage to ensure that the mass-produced solution will pass the scale test.
We test all products extensively during manufacturing and detail and catalog all of our manufacturing test results – ensuring all along the way that your newly designed product works perfectly.
